Belize is a former British Colony which was known as British Honduras. Although Belize gained independence in 1981 it still retains strong links with England. Located on the Caribbean Coast of Northern Central America and bordered by Mexico and Guatemala Belize boasts a diverse culture. English is the official language although Spanish is widely spoken. Due to it being a former British Colony, the laws are based on the British system.
In 1990 Belize enacted the International Business Companies Act and in a short space of 10 years Belize has become a major jurisdiction for the registration of International Business Companies. The legislation for Belize’s IBC’s are considered one of the most modern and user-friendly and this has meant that Belize has become a convenient place to do business. Despite its sometimes inferior reputation with regards to compliance and legality, Belize has passed many laws including the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, which has improved its reputation and made it a credible jurisdiction in which to base an offshore company.
